According to Irish media, Higgins, who was in Rome for the World Food Forum, answered journalists’ questions about Israel’s attack on the al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza. Higgins stressed the importance of a credible investigation into those responsible, how the incident was carried out, and what the consequences would be.

Asked by reporters whether the attack could be considered a war crime, Higgins replied, “It should definitely be considered a war crime.” Pointing out that there are attacks by Israel on the one hand, and that Gazans are already living in poor conditions, Higgins said that concerns about violations of international law, including the restriction of water, medical aid, and food, cannot be set aside. Higgins also stated that the imposition of a ban on food access is contrary to international law and international humanitarian law, and pointed out that a meticulous investigation should be carried out to prevent another similar attack in the future.
